Position statement
Hello, my name is Pierre Laurin and I’m a Fellow of both the CIA and the Casualty Actuarial Society, and a Certified Enterprise Risk Analyst. I have been retired for several years following a career spanning over 40 years. My main area of expertise is P&C insurance, specifically capital management.
I have enjoyed an international career having worked in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States and Canada. I spent about as much time working abroad as I did in Canada, and roughly as much time doing corporate work as consulting. I was chief actuary for one of the largest international insurance companies, responsible for P&C insurance and life insurance. While in the US, I was in charge of purchasing reinsurance and managing both internal and external reinsurance for one of the largest commercial P&C insurers. I led the Americas P&C consulting team for a major consulting firm, with responsibility for strategy, in-force management, tactical objectives, and revenue and cost management. I have served as an Appointed Actuary for approximately 20 Canadian branches and companies, and was recognized on several occasions as top seller of the year in consulting revenue.
I have sat on multiple boards – as a director, chair and member – for insurance entities ranging from a simple unit to satellite insurance funds. I currently sit as an executive member on an environmental protection committee opposed to the commissioning of an open-pit mine in a green recreational site, which requires public, political and committed involvement.
I bring extensive professional experience, complemented by a questioning perspective shaped by stepping back in recent years.
