ACIA modules and Capstone Exam
The ACIA modules and Capstone Exam are integral components of the educational pathway toward achieving the Associate of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (ACIA) designation. These components bridge the gap between university education and the professional work environment, enhancing the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful actuarial career.
The modules and Capstone Exam are administered online via the CIA learning management system. Detailed learning objectives are available through the CIA Education Syllabus.
Enrollment as a Student or Candidate member of the CIA is a requirement to register for any CIA education product.
ACIA Module 1
ACIA Module 1 is designed for students enrolled in an accredited university program and certain candidates in Pathway 2 looking to become ACIA via an actuarial organization education system not currently recognized by the CIA. Key learning objectives:
- Introduction and actuarial communications
- The actuarial environment
- Actuarial work

There are no formal prerequisites for Module 1, though candidates should have completed some actuarial courses if enrolled in an accredited university program. It is recommended that university students take the ACIA Module 1 after year 1 or 2 of their accredited program, however it can also be taken after graduation.
The module is graded using a combination of tests, quizzes and assignments. The module must be completed within six months of registration.
ACIA Module 2
ACIA Module 2 applies theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios through graded assignments, a case study and quizzes, all of which must be successfully completed to pass the module. It is required by all ACIA candidates, unless otherwise exempt. Key topics include:
- Traditional actuarial solutions
- Advanced actuarial models
- Predictive analytics applications

Candidates have up to three attempts for each quiz and six months to complete the module from the date of registration. University students are recommended to undertake Module 2 prior to the start of their final year, however it can also be completed after graduation. Please refer to current CIA transition rules to determine your requirements.
ACIA Capstone Exam
The ACIA Capstone Exam is a two-day open-book exam assessing the integration of actuarial concepts and communication skills. It consists of:
- The common section (four hours)
- The specialized section (two hours, with the option to complete either its long- or short-term sections)

Please refer to the full ACIA syllabus for additional exam information, including learning objectives and reading references. Past exams and sample solutions are available after registration for the ACIA Capstone Exam. This exam assumes knowledge from a CIA-accredited actuarial science degree, or education obtained from another actuarial organization, as well as the ACIA modules. Please refer to the full ACIA syllabus for additional exam information, including learning objectives and reading references. The exam is held online with secure proctoring, and candidates need access to Microsoft Excel and RStudio. Detailed information and prerequisites can be found in the ACIA Capstone Exam – Participant Guidelines.
