Strengthening global ties through the CIA’s International Affairs Council

To mark International Actuaries Day on September 2, the Institute is proud to spotlight the work of its International Affairs Council (IAC). We spoke with Jason Vary, FCIA, Chair of the IAC, and Hélène Baril, FCIA, IAC Vice-Chair, to explore how the Council strengthens the CIA’s global presence, fosters international partnerships and ensures Canadian actuaries have a voice in shaping the future of the actuarial profession worldwide.

The role and influence of the International Affairs Council

The IAC’s central mission is to enhance the CIA’s international presence and influence for the benefit of its members and the profession at large. This involves cultivating strategic relationships with key supranational organizations such as the International Actuarial Association (IAA), the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

In doing so, the IAC ensures that Canadian actuaries have a voice in shaping global standards, that the FCIA designation is recognized and portable across borders, and that members benefit from shared research, diverse perspectives, and meaningful collaboration.

Building meaningful international partnerships

The IAC’s work has led to impactful partnerships that strengthen the profession and open doors for CIA members. Through its close relationship with the IAA, Canadian actuaries have taken on leadership roles that influence global policy and practice. CIA Fellows Rob Brown and Micheline Dionne have both served as president of the IAA, and CIA Fellow Mike Lombardi is the IAA’s president-elect for 2025.

The IAC pursues mutual recognition agreements – in partnership with the CIA’s Education and Qualification Council – to increase the global recognition of the FCIA designation, making it easier for CIA Fellows to work internationally or in Canada. It has partnered with actuarial networks such as the International Association of Black Actuaries, promoting inclusivity and representation, and helped the CIA contribute to global knowledge-sharing by supporting joint research and professional development initiatives that benefit actuaries everywhere.

Recent initiatives and collaborations

The CIA was involved in the development of IFRS 17, the international insurance contracts accounting standard. Canadian actuaries played an important role through the IAA’s Insurance Accounting Committee and related working groups, earning global recognition for their expertise and leadership.

The CIA is also contributing actively to international efforts on climate change, sustainability, and the impact of AI on actuarial practice to ensure that Canadian voices are part of shaping the future of the actuarial profession.

Focused on future-proofing the profession

The actuarial profession is evolving rapidly and requires constant adaptation. Advocating for high standards in education and professionalism, coordinating across diverse organizations, and promoting the professional designations of Canadian actuaries worldwide are ongoing efforts that demand focus and dedicated volunteer leadership.

Strengthening relationships with the IAA, IASB and OECD remains a top priority. The Council is committed to supporting education, research and professional development worldwide, and to monitoring international developments that may impact Canadian practice. Emerging issues such as economic shifts, regulatory changes and technological advancements are also being monitored carefully.

To support these goals, the IAC is focused on maintaining a strong pipeline of volunteers, building capacity both in Canada and abroad, and enhancing communication with CIA members.

International Actuaries Day

International Actuaries Day is a time of reflection and inspiration. It commemorates the founding of the profession and celebrates its evolution and growing impact. For actuaries, it’s a chance to connect with peers globally, share knowledge, and raise public awareness about their vital role in risk management and decision-making.

It also serves as a day to inspire future generations, explore emerging opportunities, and honour the profession’s past while embracing the challenges of the future.

The IAC embodies this spirit year-round, promoting collaboration, advancing standards, and ensuring Canadian actuaries are part of shaping a better world.

Want to get involved on a global level?

CIA members who want to support international efforts have several ways to get involved. Joining an IAA Section is a great starting point, offering opportunities to connect with international peers and participate in global initiatives. Members can also update their volunteer profile on the CIA’s website to indicate an interest in international affairs or reach out to Jason Vary or Hélène Baril.
