It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Peter F. Morse (FCIA), a former President of the CIA, at the age of 83 on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Peter died peacefully at the North Shore Hospice in North Vancouver.
Peter was born in September 1942 in Midhurst, England, and graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1964. He began his actuarial career in Montreal, returning to Vancouver in the late 1970s. For most of his career, Peter provided pension consulting services, most notably with WTW (then known as Towers Perrin), retiring in the early 2000s.
Peter’s contributions to the CIA were significant and enduring. He was elected CIA President for the 1998-99 term, serving with distinction, playing a key role in establishing consolidated standards of practice and setting the foundations of what is now the Professional Conduct Board.
A dedicated volunteer, Peter received the Award of Excellence in 2015. He chaired and participated in numerous CIA volunteer groups throughout his career, completing 24 terms of service. Notable roles included:
- President of the CIA
- Member of the CIA Board
- Chair of the Committee on Professional Conduct
- Chair of the Elections Committee
- Member of the Task Force on Health Care
Peter will receive the Lifetime Award posthumously in recognition of his commitment to advancing the profession and supporting its governance; a legacy that leaves a lasting impact on the Institute and its members.
Beyond his professional life, Peter will be remembered for his sharp mind, quick wit and many passions, including golf, competitive bridge and coaching youth baseball. He was an enthusiastic Vancouver Canucks fan.
Peter is survived by his partner, Kathryn Shannon, and her daughter, Jen; his children Philip (Margaret), Ingrid and Erica, and their mother, Anita; his granddaughters Lauren (Kenzie), Jaclyn (Craig) and Kristen; his brother, John (Maria); and his nephew, Chris (Jen).
Peter’s leadership and volunteer spirit helped shape the CIA into what it is today, and we are grateful for his contributions.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues.
