The CIA Board is responsible for the governance and strategic direction of the Institute. As a voting member, you have a role in ensuring that the CIA has strong leadership.
Whether you want to run for election, support another member or simply vote, your actions contribute to the continuing advancement of the profession. This is your chance to shape both your profession and future.
Put your name forward
The positions to be filled in the 2025 elections are the President-Elect (one) and Directors (four).
You can play a key role in the development of the actuarial profession in Canada. The CIA Board is a collaborative space to share and discuss ideas, develop professional skills and build a diverse professional network.
The deadline to run for the 2025 CIA elections is March 27.

Candidate information
As the leaders of the actuarial profession in Canada, the CIA Board plays a key role in developing the strategic plan for the Institute and steering the future direction of the profession.
As a Board member, you’ll have the opportunity to help develop and strengthen the actuarial profession in Canada while advancing your career, growing your network and working alongside professionals who share your passion for excellence.
The primary duties of Board members include:
- Contributing to the success of the Institute and its members.
- Promoting the Canadian actuarial profession nationally and internationally.
- Advancing the profession through the development of strategic planning.
Beyond meeting with other Board members, you’ll likely be assigned to sit on a Board committee (sometimes more than one) as well as serve as a liaison or Board representative on volunteer groups, including those of other actuarial associations.
Board members play a key role on CIA Board committees, task forces and steering committees.
The current standing Board committees are:
- Governance and Nominations Committee
- Human Resources, Finance, Audit and Risk Committee
Current CIA Board members identified and ranked 11 areas of expertise that make for a strong Board:
- Strategic planning
- Financial literacy
- Leadership
- Working with professional conduct and disciplinary issues
- Risk assessment and management
- Organizational management
- Marketing and public relations
- Experience with professional associations
- Performance management
- Human resources
- Auditing skills
Board members aren’t expected to have all these skills, but the Board as a group should have all these areas covered.
Directors:
- Participate in strategic planning and implementation.
- Review and approve policies of the Institute.

President:
- Facilitate Board meetings in a manner that engages Directors.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to ensure strong organizational leadership.
- Be the public figurehead of the Institute.
Several former Directors provided estimates of the time commitment required to fulfil their duties during their term. Although these estimates varied between individuals depending on their assignments and how much time they devoted to certain tasks, the average annual commitment reported was between 5% and 10% of their working time, or approximately 15 hours per month.
Each Director serves a three-year term. The President-Elect serves a one-year term, followed by one year as President and another year as Immediate Past President.

- Post content related to member questions.
- Update your photo to a CIA-branded election photo.
- Encourage your peers to vote between May 6 and May 27.
CIA Board members contribute to the future of the Institute while honing leadership skills. Being a member of the Board is an opportunity to learn about the fiduciary responsibility of boards, develop business skills in negotiation and compromise and build your self-confidence for future opportunities in your professional life.

The slate of 2025 candidates will be introduced on April 22.
Vote

Voting is your opportunity to support candidates who can effectively represent your voice. Have your say and elect a Board that’s accountable to you, the Institute’s membership.
Note that members must be an ACIA of 5+ years or an FCIA to vote.
Voting for the 2025 CIA elections opens on May 6 and closes on May 27 at 15:00 ET.
