Run for election

As the leaders of the actuarial profession in Canada, the CIA Board plays a key role in developing the strategic plan for the Institute and steering the future direction of the profession.

As a Board member, you’ll have the opportunity to help develop and strengthen the actuarial profession in Canada while advancing your career, growing your network and working alongside professionals who share your passion for excellence.

The primary duties of Board members include:

• Contributing to the success of the Institute and its members.
• Promoting the Canadian actuarial profession nationally and internationally.
• Advancing the profession through the development of strategic planning.

Beyond meeting with other Board members, you’ll likely be assigned to sit on a Board committee (sometimes more than one) as well as serve as a liaison or Board representative on volunteer groups, including those of other actuarial associations.

Board members play a key role on CIA Board committees, task forces and steering committees.
The current standing Board committees are:

• Governance and Nominations Committee
• Human Resources, Finance, Audit and Risk Committee

Current CIA Board members identified and ranked 11 areas of expertise that make for a strong Board:

• Strategic planning
• Financial literacy
• Leadership
• Working with professional conduct and disciplinary issues
• Risk assessment and management
• Organizational management
• Marketing and public relations
• Experience with professional associations
• Performance management
• Human resources
• Auditing skills

Board members aren’t expected to have all these skills, but the Board as a group should have all these areas covered.

Directors:

• Participate in strategic planning and implementation.
• Review and approve policies of the Institute.

President:

• Facilitate Board meetings in a manner that engages Directors.
• Collaborate with the Executive Director to ensure strong organizational leadership.
• Be the public figurehead of the Institute.

Several former Directors provided estimates of the time commitment required to fulfil their duties during their term. Although these estimates varied between individuals depending on their assignments and how much time they devoted to certain tasks, the average annual commitment reported was between 5% and 10% of their working time, or approximately 15 hours per month.

Each Director serves a three-year term. The President-Elect serves a one-year term, followed by one year as President and another year as Immediate Past President.

• Encourage your peers to vote between May 6 and May 27.

CIA Board members contribute to the future of the Institute while honing leadership skills. Being a member of the Board is an opportunity to learn about the fiduciary responsibility of boards, develop business skills in negotiation and compromise and build your self-confidence for future opportunities in your professional life.
