Present Your Research in Berlin at the International Congress of Actuaries 2018

The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) is pleased to announce our participation in the International Congress of Actuaries (ICA) Young Researcher Award Program, in conjunction with the ICA 2018 Congress, June 4–8, 2018 in Berlin, Germany.

The Young Researcher Award Program will recognize and reward research by individuals in the early stage of their career, and provide a chance for them to present their work to an international audience. The CIA will choose one member of the Institute to represent Canada at the ICA, and will cover their costs to present their winning thesis or paper at the Berlin Congress.

What Papers Are Eligible?

We are looking for papers or theses on an actuarial topic, authored by a young researcher who is a member of the CIA at the beginning of their career. The paper must be in line with the topics selected for the Congress, which are listed starting on page 8 of the ICA 2018 call for papers.

Sample Topics
Each special-interest section (AFIR/ERM, health, life, pensions, etc.) has a list of main topics for ICA 2018. The program also includes joint sessions covering cross-section topics. The following sample is a list of topics under “risk management” within the AFIR/ERM section:

  • Risk strategy, risk appetite, limit systems;
  • Performance measurement;
  • Risk management in extreme scenarios and implications in a macro-economic context (e.g., procyclical effects);
  • Governance, communication and influence of risk management on business decisions; and
  • Three years of Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) experience.
Due to the short time frame, completed papers or those that will be complete by September 1, 2017 are eligible and do not need to have been published. The paper can be written in either English or French; however, you must provide an English abstract. Papers must be received by September 1, 2017 to be eligible for consideration.

How Do I Submit?
Send electronic copies of the papers to ICA2018@cia-ica.ca. Please send any questions about the program to this e-mail address as well.
