Paper Drafted by CIA Member on Canadian Pension Funding Wins Society of Actuaries’ Contest

CIA member Chun-Ming (George) Ma’s paper, “Funding of Public Sector Pension Plans”, was one of the winning submissions in the Society of Actuaries’ (SOA) Retirement 20/20 Call for Models for Public Pension Plans Contest. The paper, which should be of interest to Canadian actuaries, explores the funding approach currently applied to defined benefit pension plans in Canada. The suggested model emphasizes how the pension benefits provided to a generation of participants could be funded by level costs paid over the service periods of that generation.

“Finding the Optimal Pension Plan for Public Sector Workers: A Mix of DB and DC Pension Elements”, a paper co-written by members Rob Brown and Stephen Eadie, earned an honourable mention.
