Cyber Security Notice

The CIA IT department recently detected what could be characterized as a potential attempt to gain access to its data servers. Upon further investigation, it appears as though no breach of member data has occurred. However, we are bringing this to your attention today, and asking members to change their CIA members’ site account passwords as a precautionary measure. Going forward, we also recommend that you change your password every three to six months, as a best practice.

To change your password, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the CIA website using your current password.
  2. Under the WELCOME, <your name> heading, click Update account details.
  3. In the Old Password field, enter your current password.
  4. In the New Password field, enter a new password.

Note: Industry standards recommend that passwords be eight characters in length, a mix of numbers and letters, at least one special character, and a mix of upper and lower case letters.

  5. Click the Update button.
Various studies indicate that cyberattacks are on the rise and are no longer simply the target of large corporations but rather smaller, more vulnerable companies as well. Although the CIA is a small organization, we do not take this matter lightly and strive to protect our members’ information based on best practices for associations of comparable size and resources. We use standard industry practice such as using PayPal and storing only the last four digits of a credit card number for identification purposes for any financial transactions (e.g., registering for a meeting or paying dues online). We are also vigilant about examining and implementing ways to increase the security of all information exchanges between the Institute and its members.

Once again, we want to assure members that no breach of CIA systems has occurred to date. Your cooperation and assistance are appreciated and we apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may cause.

At the request of CIA President Dave Dickson, the Board will receive a full report on CIA cyber security at next week’s Board meeting.
