Actuaries Climate IndexTM Updates for Spring 2017

On January 17, 2018, organizations representing the actuarial profession in Canada and the United States updated the Actuaries Climate IndexTM (ACI) an objective, quarterly measure of changes in extreme weather frequency and sea level, available online at The five-year moving average of the ACI for spring 2017 was 1.14, the same value as reported in the previous quarter, which was a record.

Updates for values are posted quarterly on the ACI website as data for each meteorological season become available. The organizations are also developing a second index, the Actuaries Climate Risk Index, to measure correlations between changes in the frequency of extreme events as measured by the index and economic losses, mortality, and injuries.

The ACI, sponsored by the American Academy of Actuaries, the CIA, the Casualty Actuarial Society, and the Society of Actuaries, is designed to provide actuaries, public policymakers, and the general public with objective data about changes in the frequency of extreme climate events over recent decades.
